About this resource
Grounded in SPJ's 'Minimize harm' principle and Philippine data-privacy rules.
1. Explain the purpose
Say who you are, where it will be published and how it will be used before recording.
2. Get informed consent
Get consent on record or in writing. Agree whether they can be named, shown or only quoted. See the consent form template.
3. Avoid promises you can't keep
Don't promise outcomes, payment or approval of the final edit unless you will honour it.
4. Protect vulnerable people
Take extra care with minors, victims, whistleblowers and people at risk. Blur faces and remove identifying details when needed.
5. Give officials a fair chance
Send specific questions in writing and a reasonable deadline. Report non-response accurately.
6. Confirm quotes and facts
Record (with permission), transcribe accurately, and check names, titles and figures before publishing.
